Frequently Asked Questions

What is Wellness Coaching?

Wellness coaching is a client-centered process that focuses on enhancing an individual's well-being across various aspects of life, including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. It involves working with a wellness coach to identify personal health and wellness goals, uncover motivations for change, create actionable strategies, and implement sustainable habits.

  • Personalized Goals: Coaches help clients set realistic, personalized goals that reflect their values, interests, and lifestyle. These goals often span beyond physical health to include stress management, work-life balance, and emotional well-being.

  • Holistic Approach: Wellness coaching adopts a holistic view, recognizing that multiple facets of one's life contribute to their overall health. It encompasses nutrition, exercise, mental health, sleep, and relationships.

  • Accountability and Support: Coaches provide the accountability and encouragement necessary to keep clients motivated. They offer guidance, support, and sometimes challenge clients to overcome obstacles and make progress towards their goals.

  • Empowerment: A significant aim of wellness coaching is to empower individuals to take control of their health and make decisions that lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. It's about building confidence and resilience to navigate life's challenges.

  • Behavior Change: Through various techniques, including motivational interviewing and habit formation strategies, wellness coaches assist clients in making and sustaining lifestyle changes that contribute to improved health and wellness.

Your effort and perseverance are what will drive your transformation, and I'll be here to support you every step of the way.

Are you selling a diet plan or supplements?

No. I'm not selling a specific diet plan, eating plans, or supplements. What I will do is help you investigate eating styles and supplements that are of interest to you. We will work together to find an eating style that fits your lifestyle. But ultimately how you nourish your body is up to you.

How does coaching differ from therapy or counseling?

Wellness coaching and counseling (or therapy) share a common goal of improving an individual's quality of life but differ in focus, methodology, and the issues they are equipped to address.

Focus

  • Wellness Coaching: Primarily focuses on the present and future, helping clients set and achieve goals related to their overall well-being, including physical health, nutrition, exercise, stress management, and lifestyle changes. It’s action-oriented, emphasizing positive changes to enhance one's life.

  • Counseling/Therapy: Tends to focus more on addressing specific psychological issues, past traumas, or mental health disorders. Therapy can delve into past experiences and how they impact current behaviors and emotions, aiming to heal emotional pain and psychological issues.

Methodology

  • Wellness Coaching: Utilizes a collaborative approach, with the coach acting as a facilitator or guide. The process is client-driven, with the coach providing support, accountability, and encouragement to help the client achieve their self-identified wellness goals.

  • Counseling/Therapy: Involves therapeutic techniques that are often more directive than those used in coaching. Therapists diagnose and treat mental health issues using established methodologies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychoanalysis, or other psychological treatments.

Scope of Practice

  • Wellness Coaching: Does not diagnose or treat mental health disorders. Instead, it supports individuals in making lifestyle adjustments to improve their overall well-being. It’s well-suited for people looking to make positive health changes or enhance their personal development.

  • Counseling/Therapy: Licensed professionals diagnose and treat mental health and emotional disorders. Therapy is appropriate for individuals dealing with significant psychological issues, mental health disorders, or those in need of professional emotional support.

Qualifications

  • Wellness Coaching: Coaches may come from various backgrounds and typically receive certification from wellness coaching programs. They do not require a license to practice but often have training in coaching techniques, nutrition, fitness, and stress management.

  • Counseling/Therapy: Therapists and counselors have advanced degrees in psychology, social work, or counseling and are licensed by state boards. Their extensive training enables them to diagnose and treat mental health conditions.

  •

While wellness coaching and counseling/therapy have distinct roles, both contribute significantly to an individual's health and well-being. In some cases, people might benefit from both simultaneously—for instance, seeing a therapist for mental health issues while working with a wellness coach to achieve health and lifestyle goals.

What does a coaching session look like?

Your coaching session will take place either in person, by video, or phone and will last anywhere from 30-60 minutes. We will begin with discussing your current wellness, values, and vision for the future. From there we will identify areas of growth and explore possible goals and actions to get you closer to your vision. You'll leave the session with a clear plan, equipped with strategies and motivation to implement positive changes. Throughout, the emphasis is on creating a supportive, judgment-free environment where you're encouraged to explore what wellness means to you.
